Samdech Krala Hom Sar Kheng Chairs a Meeting to Hear the Report on Expired Identity Cards
Phnom Penh: Samdech Krala Hom Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, this morning, October 25, 2022, chaired a meeting to hear a report on expired ID cards at the Ministry of Interior.
The meeting was attended by His Excellency Sak Setha, Permanent Secretary of State of the Ministry of Interior, His Excellency Secretary of State, Undersecretary of State, His Excellency General Santiband, General Commissioner of the National Police, His Excellency the General Director of the Identification Department, His Excellency the Secretary General, and the relevant officials. Addressing the meeting, Samdech Krala Hom Sar Kheng emphasized that, as necessary, Samdech requested to convene the meeting today to hear the report and find solutions if there are any challenges related to the expiration of ID cards while the National Committee Voting is in progress, voter registration.
His Excellency General Kang Sakhorn, Director General of the General Department of Identification, said that so far, more than 12 million people have received their ID cards, of which more than 800,000 have expired by the end of 2022. Provide ID cards to about 3,000 people a day.
His Excellency also noted that the number of expired ID cards may continue to increase to more than 1 million by July 2023 and that among the people whose ID cards will expire in the near future. Some died, some were imprisoned and a large number migrated.
His Excellency the Director General continued that the measures to be taken in the future are to promote the dissemination to the people in all localities: Capital, Province, Municipality, District, Khan, Commune, Sangkat and demand the active support from the relevant authorities and officials at the sub-national level so that Citizens know that the ID card they are using is about to expire and participate in the process of re-identifying the ID card.
After listening to the report of His Excellency the General Director of the General Department of Identification, Samdech Krala Hom Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister, led the members of the meeting to continue discussing the relevant issues raised in the meeting in order to take measures to promote Identification card for citizens.
