ASEAN does not allow Ukrainian president to address ASEAN summit on request
Phnom Penh: ASEAN will not allow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelinsky to make a statement at the upcoming ASEAN Summit and related summits. This was confirmed by Mr. Kong Phok, Spokesman of the ASEAN Summit and related meetings in the press conference on the evening of November 10, 2022.
Regarding the request of the President of Ukraine to address the opening ceremony of the ASEAN Summit, the ASEAN Summit Spokesman stated that the matter was passed by consensus from all ASEAN members and, as a guest of the ASEAN Chair. Only attend events that are not related to the meeting.
“As the chair of ASEAN, we will do our best for the cause of peace and ASEAN will be able to act as a mediator for peace in Ukraine if requested by the relevant parties,” he said.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), on the afternoon of November 1, 2022, His Excellency Volodymyr Zelinsky, President of the Republic of Ukraine, requested Samdech Techo Hun Sen to deliver a video address during the opening of the ASEAN Summit.
