His Excellency Dr. Hun Manet emphasized this during the inauguration ceremony of a pagoda in Takeo province recently. His Excellency’s remarks were in response to a number of foreign opposition groups accusing the Royal Government of Cambodia of neglecting the poor.
His Excellency Dr. Hun Manet responded to this criticism, he asked the critics that any country does not have a poor population? According to his research, HE Dr. HUN Manet found that there are 300,000 homeless people in France. There are about 230,000 homeless people in Britain and about 550,000 in the United States.
However, HE Dr. HUN Manet also acknowledged that in Cambodia there are still people living below the poverty line, but the rate of people living below the poverty line is not high anymore. In the 1990s, nearly 40 percent of the population lived below the poverty line, but now it is only about 17 percent.
HE Dr. HUN Manet also mentioned a large number of interventions to the people who live below the poverty line. These interventions include the introduction of social protection policies through the issuance of equity cards, which also provide monthly subsidies and the provision of free medical services in public hospitals. In addition, when people are affected by the Kovid 19 crisis, the Royal Government of Cambodia spends about $ 40 million a month to support the lives of the poor.
And in addition to providing equity cards and monthly subsidies, the Royal Government has recently introduced a policy to provide cash subsidies to people at risk from the inflation crisis.
